Makita continuously innovates, with the guiding principle that new or improved products contribute positively to a sustainable and liveable society.

1915: Japanese origin

Makita's passion for quality originated in Japan in 1915 when Mosaburo Makita laid the foundation for what grew into the current concern. In the first decades of the last century, the demand for electricity increased enormously. Makita Electric Works was founded as a sales and repair company for lighting equipment, electric motors and transformers. Makita was the first company in Japan to produce and sell portable electric planers in the 1950s. From the 1970s, the company started operating internationally, first in the US. As a global concern, Makita has factories and sales and service locations all over the world, 17 in Europe. The company employs 17,000 people serving customers in 170 countries. More than 40% of the turnover is generated in Europe. Makita celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015.
